SUMMARY:Restoration: A Peer Support & Education Group for Individuals Living with Chronic Pain Conditions
DESCRIPTION:This May HopeWorks will launch Restoration\, a peer support and education group\, for individuals living with chronic pain conditions.  The group will begin (via Zoom) on Sunday\, May 15\, 2022\, from 3PM to 4:30PM. After the May inaugural gathering the group will meet quarterly with future 2022 sessions meeting August 21 and November 6. \nAll are welcome. Participation in the group is free but registration is required. \n  \nWhy a Chronic Pain Group? \nOne of our guiding principles at HopeWorks is to work towards the real change that we believe is possible; change for individuals as well as for the systems that fuel violence. We know that we are each a part of this change. \nThe Self-care & Social Justice Projects at HopeWorks are designed to address this principle; providing opportunities for people to be heard\, witnessed\, and to become agents of change in their lives and for the community. These free programs offer the opportunity to address and decrease the root causes of the systems that fuel sexism\, racism\, poverty\, transphobia\, health disparities\, xenophobia\, and other forms of oppression. \nCommunities of color\, populations with a lower socioeconomic status\, rural communities\, people with physical disabilities\, and individuals who identify as LGBTQ are often disproportionately exposed to conditions and environments that negatively affect health risks and outcomes. This is shown to lead to higher rates of health disparities. \nRestoration is one of the programs that HopeWorks hosts to address this issue. To learn about ARTiculation\, HopeWorks’ expressive-arts peer support and education group for survivors visit:  The Our Voice Project \n  \nAmerican Chronic Pain Association \nWhen possible\, Restoration will meet in-person at HopeWorks\, located inside the NonProfit Collaborative of Howard County at 9770 Patuxent Woods Dr\, Columbia\, MD 21046. \nThe HopeWorks’ Restoration is the Columbia MD Chapter of the American Chronic Pain Association (ACPA). The ACPA is a nonprofit\, self-help group designed to teach people who suffer from chronic pain (pain that continues longer than six months and is not completely relieved by medication or medical treatment) to reduce the impact pain has on their working and personal lives. \nAll prospective members are welcome to attend this free group.  Email the Director of Community Engagement\, Vanita Leatherwood at vleatherwood@hopeworksofhc.org or call (410) 997-0304 for more information. \n  \nClick Here to Register!

SUMMARY:"Writing" Relationship Wrongs: A Teen Writing Workshop to Explore Relationship Dynamics
DESCRIPTION:  \nFebruary is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM) and HopeWorks’ Youth Leadership Project is honoring it by hosting a writing workshop in March to help their peers & adults in their life reflect and explore healthy relationships\, love\, and dating. Dating violence is more common than people think\, especially among teens and young adults: one in three teens in the US will experience physical\, sexual\, or emotional abuse from someone they’re in a relationship with before they become adults\, and nearly half (43%) of college women report experiencing violent or abusive dating behaviors. This TDVAM\, join HopeWorks’ Youth Leaders as they reflect upon the elements of the many relationships that surround us. \nThis workshop will be held virtually and is open to the general public\, ages 13 and up. \nHow It Works \n\nAfter you register\, you will receive a confirmation email containing the link to join the event on Zoom. We will also provide a phone number and password if you want to call-in instead.\nYou are not required to create a Zoom account or install special software to attend. You can use any computer to join via the link\, or call-in from any mobile or landline phone. (It’s recommended that you have a reliable internet connection or cell phone service!)\nAt the time of the event\, just click the link or call-in!\n\nAccessibility \nOur goal is to make virtual events as accessible as possible\, however we are still learning how to use Zoom ourselves. The chat box feature will be available during this event. Unfortunately\, at this time\, we do not have the option for closed captioning during live events. If you have any specific questions\, concerns\, or suggestions about access please contact Victoria Rain at vrain@hopeworksofhc.org and MC Carey at mcarey@hopeworksofhc.org. \n  \nClick Here to Register!

A feminist book club is a perfect way to work on that liberation\, decolonization\, and engage your mind and soul in topics that matter to you. \nOur goal with this book club is to uncover the ways our current way of living helps to perpetuate a culture of violence that keeps certain people in a place of power and functions with a strict form of hierarchy. We cannot liberate ourselves without the liberation of the masses. In this book club\, we will focus on reading seminal works by women of color\, queer & trans folks\, and stories of a new world. We are hoping that this book club can both act as a source of support for the community during this time of crisis and also help provide a source of community action building focusing on sharing diverse stories. \nBecause we will be discussing tough topics that deal with the root causes of gender and sexual violence\, stories of trauma and pain\, LGBTQ+ community\, racism & prejudice\, and community building\, and other historical change makers we suggest that you think very carefully on whether these topics align with your values.

SUMMARY:A Listening Session for Teens
DESCRIPTION:“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate;\nonly love can do that.”\n-Martin Luther King\, Jr.\nPart of the Living the Dream MLK Day of Service Celebration: HopeWorks’ Youth Leadership Project Presents a Teen Listening Session \nAs HopeWorks continues to grow and center our work around creating a world free from violence\, we\nunderstand that society’s racist structures have impacted our relationships with each other and the\nworld. It is important to talk about the ways we engage with each other in terms of peace and\nintersectionality; and constantly be open to learn. This coming MLK day\, HopeWorks’ Youth Leaders strive\nto engage and continue these important conversations of non-violence\, peace\, and social justice that\nMartin Luther King\, Jr. advocated for. \nYoung people ages 13 to 18 are invited to join HopeWorks’ Youth Leaders as teens\nengage in conversation around non-violence\, peace\, and social justice. Conversation will\ninvolve how these topics may or may not show up in teens’ daily lives and how today’s\nrealities impact their visibility. We hope to learn and share with each other in a way that\ncan provide the most relief. \nClick Here to Register!

On October 7th\, we come together to both mourn those whose lives have been lost to domestic violence/intimate partner violence and to solidify our communities in our own capacity to envision a world free from gender-based violence. \nIt’s more important than ever that we take gender-based violence prevention on as a community issue. Our duties as community members are to protect one another and engage ourselves and youth in the techniques they need to end the cycle of violence. We can only do this if as a community we work to envision the world we want to live in. \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Sisters Rising: Movie Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 2\, 2021 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.\nApril is Sexual Assault Awareness month and HopeWorks’ Youth Leadership Project is honoring it by hosting a movie screening and discussion of “Sisters Rising” directed by Willow O’Feral and Brad Heck. Please join HopeWorks’ Youth Leaders to engage in conversation around sexual assault\, intersectionality\, and oppression. \nSisters Rising is an impactful documentary about six Native American women reclaiming personal and tribal sovereignty. This screening will be held virtually through the assistance of Women Make Movies and is open to the general public. \nClick Here to Register\n  \nMovie Synopsis\nSISTERS RISING is the story of six Native American women fighting to restore personal and tribal sovereignty in the face of ongoing sexual violence against Indigenous women in the United States. \nNative American women are 2.5 times more likely to experience sexual assault than all other American women. 1 in 3 Native women report having been raped during her lifetime and 86% of the offenses are committed by non-Native men. These perpetrators exploit gaps in tribal jurisdictional authority and target Native women as ‘safe victims’. The film follows six women who refuse to let this pattern of violence continue in the shadows: a tribal cop in the midst of the North Dakota oil boom\, an attorney fighting to overturn restrictions on tribal sovereignty\, a teacher of Indigenous women’s self-defense\, grassroots advocates working to influence legislative change\, and the author of the first anti-sex trafficking code to be introduced to a reservation’s tribal court. Their stories shine an unflinching light on righting injustice on both an individual and systemic level. \nSISTERS RISING is an urgent call to action\, a gorgeous portrait of powerful women acting in solidarity\, and a demand for tribal sovereignty and self-determination as the necessary step towards ending violence against Native women.

Systems of oppression thrive off our inability to make peace with difference and injure the relationship we have with our own bodies. The Body Is Not an Apologyoffers radical self-love as the balm to heal the wounds inflicted by these violent systems. World-renowned activist and poet Sonya Renee Taylor invites us to reconnect with the radical origins of our minds and bodies and celebrate our collective\, enduring strength. As we awaken to our own indoctrinated body shame\, we feel inspired to awaken others and to interrupt the systems that perpetuate body shame and oppression against all bodies. When we act from this truth on a global scale\, we usher in the transformative opportunity of radical self-love\, which is the opportunity for a more just\, equitable\, and compassionate world–for us all. \n  \nBook:The Body Is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Loveby Sonia Renee Taylor \nMeeting Dates:March 8th & March 22nd \nPlatform: Zoom (Link available once registered) \nHow to Join\nIf you are interested in becoming a member of “Between the Lines: A Liberation Book Club” please see the link below to fill out an interest form.

From early on\, Cheryl knew there was more to life than what we see on the surface. With Cheryl’s practice of peace and love\, she served the greater community and created Yoga Salutes Non-Violence. Her mission was to raise awareness and support for the survivors of domestic and sexual violence through the practice of yoga. Yoga at its core encourages nonviolence\, compassionate action\, and service to those in need. It is in her loving memory that we continue her work. \nThank you for your support and for paving a brighter\, stronger\, future and community for all. You have what it takes to help! \nClick here to download event flier.
