SUMMARY:HopeWorks' Annual Candlelight Vigil
DESCRIPTION:Come Join Us for A Night of Remembrance\n  \nOctober is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Across the nation\, local communities will engage in various campaigns to alert the public about this social issue. On October 7th\, we come together to both mourn those whose lives have been lost to domestic violence/intimate partner violence and to solidify our communities in our own capacity to envision a world free from gender-based violence. \nIt’s more important than ever that we take gender-based violence prevention on as a community issue. Our duties as community members are to protect one another and engage ourselves and youth in the techniques they need to end the cycle of violence. We can only do this if as a community we work to envision the world we want to live in. \nClick Here to Register

In this collection of essays\, Lambda Literary Award-winning writer and longtime activist and performance artist Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha explores the politics and realities of disability justice\, a movement that centers the lives and leadership of sick and disabled queer\, trans\, Black\, and brown people\, with knowledge and gifts for all. Care Work is a mapping of access as radical love\, a celebration of the work that sick and disabled queer/people of color are doing to find each other and to build power and community\, and a tool kit for everyone who wants to build radically resilient\, sustainable communities of liberation where no one is left behind. Powerful and passionate\, Care Work is a crucial and necessary call to arms. \nBook: Care Work: Dreaming Disability Justice by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha \nMeeting Dates: April 12th & 26th \nPlatform: Zoom (Link available once registered) \n  \nHow to Join\nIf you are interested in becoming a member of “Between the Lines: A Liberation Book Club” please see the link below to fill out an interest form. A feminist book club is a perfect way to work on that liberation\, decolonization\, and engage your mind and soul in topics that matter to you. \nOur goal with this book club is to uncover the ways our current way of living helps to perpetuate a culture of violence that keeps certain people in a place of power and functions with a strict form of hierarchy. We cannot liberate ourselves without the liberation of the masses. In this book club\, we will focus on reading seminal works by women of color\, queer & trans folks\, and stories of a new world. We are hoping that this book club can both act as a source of support for the community during this time of crisis and also help provide a source of community action building focusing on sharing diverse stories. \nBecause we will be discussing tough topics that deal with the root causes of gender and sexual violence\, stories of trauma and pain\, LGBTQ+ community\, racism & prejudice\, and community building\, and other historical change makers we suggest that you think very carefully on whether these topics align with your values.

SUMMARY:Sisters Rising: Movie Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 2\, 2021 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.\nApril is Sexual Assault Awareness month and HopeWorks’ Youth Leadership Project is honoring it by hosting a movie screening and discussion of “Sisters Rising” directed by Willow O’Feral and Brad Heck. Please join HopeWorks’ Youth Leaders to engage in conversation around sexual assault\, intersectionality\, and oppression. \nSisters Rising is an impactful documentary about six Native American women reclaiming personal and tribal sovereignty. This screening will be held virtually through the assistance of Women Make Movies and is open to the general public. \nClick Here to Register\n  \nMovie Synopsis\nSISTERS RISING is the story of six Native American women fighting to restore personal and tribal sovereignty in the face of ongoing sexual violence against Indigenous women in the United States. \nNative American women are 2.5 times more likely to experience sexual assault than all other American women. 1 in 3 Native women report having been raped during her lifetime and 86% of the offenses are committed by non-Native men. These perpetrators exploit gaps in tribal jurisdictional authority and target Native women as ‘safe victims’. The film follows six women who refuse to let this pattern of violence continue in the shadows: a tribal cop in the midst of the North Dakota oil boom\, an attorney fighting to overturn restrictions on tribal sovereignty\, a teacher of Indigenous women’s self-defense\, grassroots advocates working to influence legislative change\, and the author of the first anti-sex trafficking code to be introduced to a reservation’s tribal court. Their stories shine an unflinching light on righting injustice on both an individual and systemic level. \nSISTERS RISING is an urgent call to action\, a gorgeous portrait of powerful women acting in solidarity\, and a demand for tribal sovereignty and self-determination as the necessary step towards ending violence against Native women.

SUMMARY:Between the Lines: A Liberation Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Meets every on the Second and Fourth Monday of each month \nfrom 6:30 – 8:00pm EST\nYou’re invited to HopeWorks first community book club: “Between the Lines: A Liberation Book Club” \n“Between the Lines” will host online book club meetings on the Second and Fourth Monday of each month via Zoom from 6:30- 8:00 pm. In addition to these meetings\, the book club will use the platform GoodReads to communicate and create community participation throughout the month. Book club moderators will be able to post discussion boards and keep the conversation going with the whole club’s participation. \nThis Month’s Book\nHumans are a varied and divergent bunch with all manner of beliefs\, morals\, and bodies. Systems of oppression thrive off our inability to make peace with difference and injure the relationship we have with our own bodies. The Body Is Not an Apologyoffers radical self-love as the balm to heal the wounds inflicted by these violent systems. World-renowned activist and poet Sonya Renee Taylor invites us to reconnect with the radical origins of our minds and bodies and celebrate our collective\, enduring strength. As we awaken to our own indoctrinated body shame\, we feel inspired to awaken others and to interrupt the systems that perpetuate body shame and oppression against all bodies. When we act from this truth on a global scale\, we usher in the transformative opportunity of radical self-love\, which is the opportunity for a more just\, equitable\, and compassionate world–for us all. \n  \nBook:The Body Is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Loveby Sonia Renee Taylor \nMeeting Dates:March 8th & March 22nd \nPlatform: Zoom (Link available once registered) \nHow to Join\nIf you are interested in becoming a member of “Between the Lines: A Liberation Book Club” please see the link below to fill out an interest form. Following\, you will receive information on how to register for the book club on GoodReads and you will also receive the link for the next book club meeting on Zoom. \nBook club members will be accepted on a rolling basis throughout the book club’s existence. Each month there will be a new opportunity to join the club by signing an interest form. If you have any questions about becoming a member of “Between the Lines: a Liberation Book Club” please feel free to email Maya Carey at MCarey@wearehopeworks.org. \nClick Here to Sign Up!\n  \nAbout “Between the Lines: A Liberation Book Club”\nDue to the current COVID-19 crisis\, it’s more important than ever for us to decolonize from individualism and reconnect with ways of community care.

Her mission was to raise awareness and support for the survivors of domestic and sexual violence through the practice of yoga. Yoga at its core encourages nonviolence\, compassionate action\, and service to those in need.
