SUMMARY:Between the Lines: A Liberation Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Meets every on the Second and Fourth Monday of each month \nfrom 6:30 – 8:00pm EST\nYou’re invited to HopeWorks first community book club: “Between the Lines: A Liberation Book Club” \n“Between the Lines” will host online book club meetings on the Second and Fourth Monday of each month via Zoom from 6:30- 8:00 pm. In addition to these meetings\, the book club will use the platform GoodReads to communicate and create community participation throughout the month. Book club moderators will be able to post discussion boards and keep the conversation going with the whole club’s participation. \nThis Month’s Book\nHumans are a varied and divergent bunch with all manner of beliefs\, morals\, and bodies. Systems of oppression thrive off our inability to make peace with difference and injure the relationship we have with our own bodies. The Body Is Not an Apologyoffers radical self-love as the balm to heal the wounds inflicted by these violent systems. World-renowned activist and poet Sonya Renee Taylor invites us to reconnect with the radical origins of our minds and bodies and celebrate our collective\, enduring strength. As we awaken to our own indoctrinated body shame\, we feel inspired to awaken others and to interrupt the systems that perpetuate body shame and oppression against all bodies. When we act from this truth on a global scale\, we usher in the transformative opportunity of radical self-love\, which is the opportunity for a more just\, equitable\, and compassionate world–for us all. \n  \nBook:The Body Is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Loveby Sonia Renee Taylor \nMeeting Dates:March 8th & March 22nd \nPlatform: Zoom (Link available once registered) \nHow to Join\nIf you are interested in becoming a member of “Between the Lines: A Liberation Book Club” please see the link below to fill out an interest form. Following\, you will receive information on how to register for the book club on GoodReads and you will also receive the link for the next book club meeting on Zoom. \nBook club members will be accepted on a rolling basis throughout the book club’s existence. Each month there will be a new opportunity to join the club by signing an interest form. If you have any questions about becoming a member of “Between the Lines: a Liberation Book Club” please feel free to email Maya Carey at MCarey@wearehopeworks.org. \nClick Here to Sign Up!\n  \nAbout “Between the Lines: A Liberation Book Club”\nDue to the current COVID-19 crisis\, it’s more important than ever for us to decolonize from individualism and reconnect with ways of community care. A feminist book club is a perfect way to work on that liberation\, decolonization\, and engage your mind and soul in topics that matter to you. \nOur goal with this book club is to uncover the ways our current way of living helps to perpetuate a culture of violence that keeps certain people in a place of power and functions with a strict form of hierarchy. We cannot liberate ourselves without the liberation of the masses. In this book club\, we will focus on reading seminal works by women of color\, queer & trans folks\, and stories of a new world. We are hoping that this book club can both act as a source of support for the community during this time of crisis and also help provide a source of community action building focusing on sharing diverse stories. \nBecause we will be discussing tough topics that deal with the root causes of gender and sexual violence\, stories of trauma and pain\, LGBTQ+ community\, racism & prejudice\, and community building\, and other historical change makers we suggest that you think very carefully on whether these topics align with your values.

SUMMARY:MLK Day Listening Session for Teens
DESCRIPTION:As HopeWorks continues to grow and center our work around creating a world free from violence\, we understand that society’s racist structures have impacted our relationships with each other and the world. It is important to talk about the ways we engage with each other in terms of peace and intersectionality; and constantly be open to learn. This coming MLK day\, HopeWorks’ Youth Leaders strive to engage and continue these important conversations of non-violence\, peace\, and social justice that Martin Luther King\, Jr. advocated for. \nYoung people age 13 to 18 are invited to join HopeWorks’ Youth Leaders as teens engage in conversation around non-violence\, peace\, and social justice. Conversation will involve how these topics may or may not show up in teens’ daily lives and how today’s realities impact their visibility. We hope to learn and share with each other in a way that can provide the most relief. \nClick Here to Register!\n  \nTo download event flier\, click here.
