SUMMARY:Unapologetic: A 6-Week Workshop Series for LGBTQ+ Folks
DESCRIPTION:  \nHopeWorks of Howard County is a domestic violence and rape crisis agency. HopeWorks envisions a world of interconnected people and communities actively working towards a society where all people are safe and valued and where everyone can reach their full potential. One of the ways we work towards this vision is through our involvement with the arts and humanities. \nThis May\, the Self-Care & Social Justice programs will launch a free workshop series titled\, “Unapologetic: Using Arts and Humanities to Explore Revolution and Oppression.” The Unapologetic Workshop Series will provide 15-20 LGBTQ+ identified adults with an opportunity to participate in six sessions exploring visual arts\, performing arts\, history\, literature\, and the healing arts. Participants will dialogue with artists and scholars\, engage with herbalist and body workers\, create visual and language art projects all reflecting on queer and trans identity and liberation. They will reflect on ideas around body liberation\, healing intergenerational trauma\, myths and migration\, and more through group discussions\, writing journal entries\, and creating visual artwork. \nThe goal of the Unapologetic Workshop Series is three-fold: \na)       To catalyze individual and communal learning\, voice\, action and healing\,\nb)      To increase access to the arts and humanities\, particularly for LGBTQ+ folks\, people of color\, educationally underserved adults\, and those who have experience oppression\, and\nc)       Encourage a life-long engagement with the arts and humanities. \nAbout Unapologetic: \nUnapologetic is a free six week workshop series held in-person at HopeWorks of Howard County’s main office 9770 Patuxent Woods Drive\, Suite 300 Columbia\, MD 21046 OR at the Community Ecology Institute at the Free Town Farm at 800 Harriet Tubman Lane\, Columbia\, MD 21044. Participants must identify as LGBTQ+ and people of color are highly recommended to apply. Light meal and/or snacks will be provided at each workshop session as well as a journal for folks to use and keep throughout the series. Artists\, scholars\, and creatives will be brought in for session for participates to engage with. The creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people in a variety of ways. When we create art and reflect on it\, the processes increase self-awareness\, initiate awareness of others\, and help us cope with stress and traumatic experiences. All of our incredible artists offer reflections on life\, love\, trauma\, justice\, renewal\, and hope. This FREE in-person evening provides a dynamic opportunity to experience the power of words and the vital role that the arts provide in promoting healing\, awareness\, and change. \nWho is eligible to read their work? \nPoets who have been published in any issue of the Dragonfly Arts Magazine are eligible to read at the event. DESCRIPTION:  \n \nJoin HopeWorks for a 1-day training created to strengthen\, grow\, and expand your grasp on gender and sexual violence in your own community. \nHopeWorks of Howard County Presents the annual Teen Step One Training. This one-day interactive training for teens ages 13-18 who want to learn to be active bystanders\, advocates for healthy relationships\, and prevent sexual assault and dating violence in their schools & communities. \nTeens will use an intersectional feminist & transformative justice approach in order to learn about the root causes of violence and focus on solutions to preventing violence in their communities before it starts. Students will be expected to show up ready to engage in tough conversation and bring in their own personal narrative to help us dive deeper into the conversation. Teen Step One will rely on a student’s experience in schools\, homes\, and communities to give context to the curriculum. \nThis annual training is adapted from the two-day adult training that goes into much detail about the complexities of gender-based violence. \nStudents of all genders\, races\, religions\, abilities\, etc. are encouraged to attend. \nClick Here to Register!\n  \nREMINDER: All Youth Leadership Project participants are expected to attend Teen Step One training. DESCRIPTION:Every Tuesday at 4 p.m. via Zoom \nHopeWorks is partnering with Three and a Half Acres Yoga(THAY) to bring survivors free yoga sessions. This will be an on-going program! \nTHAY partners with community organizations within Harlem\, Upper Manhattan\, and virtually. They focus on serving folks facing emotional\, physical or social trauma. THAY provides yoga\, breathing and mindfulness programs to nonprofits to support their existing missions and build bridges of understanding among neighbors. \nPlease note that you will be able to participate while seated or on a mat. \nHow It Works\nAfter you register\, you will receive a confirmation email containing the link to join the event on Zoom. \nNew to using Zoom? DESCRIPTION:  \nIn LOVED: A Survivor Self-care Circle for Black Women\, we address “triple jeopardy;” the exploitation and oppression experienced by survivors who are Black women. Through engaging and creative activities\, we cultivate self-love\, beloved community\, and strategies to address the root causes of violence. Sessions feature the use of transformative language arts techniques\, creative expression\, guided discussions\, seminars\, and guest speakers. \nThis session will be in-person. \nLOVED is supported by a grant from the Horizon Foundation. \n  \nClick Here to Register!
