SUMMARY:Teen Step One for Youth Leaders & Community Members
DESCRIPTION:Join HopeWorks for a 1-day training created to strengthen\, grow\, and expand your grasp on gender and sexual violence in your own community. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nHopeWorks of Howard County Presents the annual Teen Step One Training. This one-day interactive training for teens ages 13-18 who want to learn to be active bystanders\, advocates for healthy relationships\, and prevent sexual assault and dating violence in their schools & communities. \nTeens will use an intersectional feminist & transformative justice approach in order to learn about the root causes of violence and focus on solutions to preventing violence in their communities before it starts. Students will be expected to show up ready to engage in tough conversation and bring in their own personal narrative to help us dive deeper into the conversation. Teen Step One will rely on a student’s experience in schools\, homes\, and communities to give context to the curriculum. \nThis annual training is adapted from the two-day adult training that goes into much detail about the complexities of gender-based violence. \nStudents of all genders\, races\, religions\, abilities\, etc. are encouraged to attend. \nREMINDER: All Teen Volunteer applicants must successfully complete the Teen Step One training to become a volunteer. If you are a teen interested in volunteering and/or has been invited to Teen Step One already\, please RSVP to Sandra Price at sprice@wearehopeworks.org. \nPlease note that we do not accept group registrations. If you are interested in bringing this or a similar workshop to your community/school/place of work\, please call 410-997-0304 and ask to speak with someone from the Community Engagement Department or email outreach@hopeworksofhc.org \n\nClick Here to Register

Diane finds a serendipitous aspect to collage that is exciting and is never sure where a piece will lead when she starts. She also enjoys making mono prints\, which allow for layering and masking that reveals hidden patterns and images. \nJudith Goedeke\nThe enormous healing power of words compels Judith Goedeke to write. Her poems appear in anthologies\, literary journals\, and River of Silver Sky. For twelve years\, she has facilitated monthly Poem as Portal workshops that foster loving and courageous self-awareness\, intentional living\, and compassion. The Poem as Portal process is the confluence of her own persistent healing efforts\, the wisdom of Eastern medicine\, the SOPHIA program (developed by Dianne Connelly\, Bob Duggan\, and John Sullivan) and most especially\, her love of words that launch us. Judith is currently collaborating in developing a program to train psychiatrists\, psychologists\, and social workers to utilize poetry in therapeutic settings. \nLiz Henzey\nLiz has been an arts administrator and arts advocate in Columbia\, Maryland for more than 30 years\, currently serving as the Director of Columbia Art Center\, a facility of the Columbia Association. She writes to inspire those who struggle to rise up out of the ashes of pain and suffering. She believes in the power of poetry and prays that her poems find their way into the hearts of those yearning to be free from the effects of sexual assault and domestic violence. \nMary Justin\nArtist Mary Justin hails amongst the shimmering waters of the raging Atlantic Ocean and the tranquil waves of the Caribbean Sea. She has danced to the rhythm of the African drums of her ancestors under the coconut and mango trees and rubbed her satisfied tummy after feasting on succulent taste of green bananas under a salt fish stew garnished with avocados. She has smelled the aroma of freshly pounded coffee and cocoa beans. Her feet swirl to the tunes of reggae\, soca\, and calypso music. Her art is the breath of a St Lucia bred girl emulating the ocean waves\, the steam from the volcanos and the rugged topography. Her colors radiate the oceans\, earth\, sky\, and the blood of generation who fought for the survival of “Fair Helen.” \nSangeeta Kaul\nVisual artist and graphic designer Sangeeta Kaul uses creativity as fuel for social change\, mental health awareness\, and community connections in her online studio Spicyseed Art & Design. Kaul enjoys organizing events designed to coach and encourage the personal creativity of the participants. SUMMARY:Restoration: A Peer Support & Education Group for Individuals Living with Chronic Pain Conditions
DESCRIPTION:This May HopeWorks will launch Restoration\, a peer support and education group\, for individuals living with chronic pain conditions.  The group will begin (via Zoom) on Sunday\, May 15\, 2022\, from 3PM to 4:30PM. After the May inaugural gathering the group will meet quarterly with future 2022 sessions meeting August 21 and November 6. \nAll are welcome. Participation in the group is free but registration is required. \n  \nWhy a Chronic Pain Group? \nOne of our guiding principles at HopeWorks is to work towards the real change that we believe is possible; change for individuals as well as for the systems that fuel violence. We know that we are each a part of this change. \nThe Self-care & Social Justice Projects at HopeWorks are designed to address this principle; providing opportunities for people to be heard\, witnessed\, and to become agents of change in their lives and for the community. These free programs offer the opportunity to address and decrease the root causes of the systems that fuel sexism\, racism\, poverty\, transphobia\, health disparities\, xenophobia\, and other forms of oppression. \nCommunities of color\, populations with a lower socioeconomic status\, rural communities\, people with physical disabilities\, and individuals who identify as LGBTQ are often disproportionately exposed to conditions and environments that negatively affect health risks and outcomes. This is shown to lead to higher rates of health disparities. \nRestoration is one of the programs that HopeWorks hosts to address this issue. To learn about ARTiculation\, HopeWorks’ expressive-arts peer support and education group for survivors visit:  The Our Voice Project \n  \nAmerican Chronic Pain Association \nWhen possible\, Restoration will meet in-person at HopeWorks\, located inside the NonProfit Collaborative of Howard County at 9770 Patuxent Woods Dr\, Columbia\, MD 21046. \nThe HopeWorks’ Restoration is the Columbia MD Chapter of the American Chronic Pain Association (ACPA). The ACPA is a nonprofit\, self-help group designed to teach people who suffer from chronic pain (pain that continues longer than six months and is not completely relieved by medication or medical treatment) to reduce the impact pain has on their working and personal lives. \nAll prospective members are welcome to attend this free group.  Email the Director of Community Engagement\, Vanita Leatherwood at vleatherwood@hopeworksofhc.org or call (410) 997-0304 for more information. \n  \nClick Here to Register!

A feminist book club is a perfect way to work on that liberation\, decolonization\, and engage your mind and soul in topics that matter to you. \nOur goal with this book club is to uncover the ways our current way of living helps to perpetuate a culture of violence that keeps certain people in a place of power and functions with a strict form of hierarchy. We cannot liberate ourselves without the liberation of the masses. In this book club\, we will focus on reading seminal works by women of color\, queer & trans folks\, and stories of a new world. We are hoping that this book club can both act as a source of support for the community during this time of crisis and also help provide a source of community action building focusing on sharing diverse stories. \nBecause we will be discussing tough topics that deal with the root causes of gender and sexual violence\, stories of trauma and pain\, LGBTQ+ community\, racism & prejudice\, and community building\, and other historical change makers we suggest that you think very carefully on whether these topics align with your values.
