April’s book isCare Work: Dreaming Disability Justiceby Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha. In this collection of essays, Lambda Literary Award-winning writer and longtime activist and performance artist Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha explores the politics and realities of disability justice, a movement that centers the lives and leadership of sick and disabled queer, trans, Black, and brown people, with knowledge and gifts for all. Care Workis a mapping of access as radical love, a celebration of the work that sick and disabled queer/people of color are doing to find each other and to build power and community, and a tool kit for everyone who wants to build radically resilient, sustainable communities of liberation where no one is left behind. Powerful and passionate, Care Workis a crucial and necessary call to arms.

Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, it’s more important than ever for us to decolonize from individualism and reconnect with ways of community care. A feminist book club is a perfect way to work on that liberation, decolonization, and engage your mind and soul in topics that matter to you.
Our goal with this book club is to uncover the ways our current way of living helps to perpetuate a culture of violence that keeps certain people in a place of power and functions with a strict form of hierarchy. We cannot liberate ourselves without the liberation of the masses. In this book club, we will focus on reading seminal works by women of color, queer & trans folks, and stories of a new world. We are hoping that this book club can both act as a source of support for the community during this time of crisis and also help provide a source of community action building focusing on sharing diverse stories.
Because we will be discussing tough topics that deal with the root causes of gender and sexual violence, stories of trauma and pain, LGBTQ+ community, racism & prejudice, and community building, and other historical change makers we suggest that you think very carefully on whether these topics align with your values.
