CALL 24-Hour Helpline: (410) 997-2272
You’re invited to HopeWorks first community book club: “Between the Lines: A Liberation Book Clubâ€
“Between the Lines†will host online book club meetings every other Monday via ZOOM from 6:30- 8:00 pm. In addition to thesemeetings, the book club will use the platform GoodReads to communicate and create community participation throughout the month. Book club moderators will be able to post discussion boards and keep the conversation going with the whole club’s participation.
Join us in reading our first book of 2021, There There by Tommy Orange. There There is the “brilliant, propulsive†story of twelve unforgettable characters, Urban Indians living in Oakland, California, who converge and collide on one fateful day. There There, the first novel by the Cheyenne and Arapaho author Tommy Orange, is a wondrous and shattering portrait of an America few of us have ever seen. It’s “masterful . . . white-hot . . . devastating†at the same time as it is fierce, funny, suspenseful, thoroughly modern, and impossible to put down. Here is a voice we have never heard—a voice full of poetry and rage, exploding onto the page with urgency and force. Tommy Orange has written a stunning novel that grapples with a complex and painful history, with an inheritance of beauty and profound spirituality, and with a plague of addiction, abuse, and suicide.

Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, it’s more important than ever for us to decolonize from individualism and reconnect with ways of community care. A feminist book club is a perfect way to work on that liberation, decolonization, and engage your mind and soul in topics that matter to you.
Our goal with this book club is to uncover the ways our current way of living helps to perpetuate a culture of violence that keeps certain people in a place of power and functions with a strict form of hierarchy. We cannot liberate ourselves without the liberation of the masses. In this book club, we will focus on reading seminal works by women of color, queer & trans folks, and stories of a new world. We are hoping that this book club can both act as a source of support for the community during this time of crisis and also help provide a source of community action building focusing on sharing diverse stories.
