Why a Chronic Pain Group?

One of our guiding principles at HopeWorks is to work towards the real change that we believe is possible; change for individuals as well as for the systems that fuel violence. We know that we are each a part of this change.

The Self-care & Social Justice Projects at HopeWorks are designed to address this principle; providing opportunities for people to be heard, witnessed, and to become agents of change in their lives and for the community. These free programs offer the opportunity to address and decrease the root causes of the systems that fuel sexism, racism, poverty, transphobia, health disparities, xenophobia, and other forms of oppression.

Communities of color, populations with a lower socioeconomic status, rural communities, people with physical disabilities, and individuals who identify as LGBTQ are often disproportionately exposed to conditions and environments that negatively affect health risks and outcomes. This is shown to lead to higher rates of health disparities.

Restoration is one of the programs that HopeWorks hosts to address this issue. To learn about ARTiculation, HopeWorks’ expressive-arts peer support and education group for survivors visit:  The Our Voice Project

American Chronic Pain Association

When possible, Restoration will meet in-person at HopeWorks, located inside the NonProfit Collaborative of Howard County at 9770 Patuxent Woods Dr, Columbia, MD 21046.

The HopeWorks’ Restoration is the Columbia MD Chapter of the American Chronic Pain Association (ACPA). The ACPA is a nonprofit, self-help group designed to teach people who suffer from chronic pain (pain that continues longer than six months and is not completely relieved by medication or medical treatment) to reduce the impact pain has on their working and personal lives.

All prospective members are welcome to attend this free group.  Email the Director of Community Engagement, Vanita Leatherwood at vleatherwood@hopeworksofhc.org or call (410) 997-0304 for more information.
